Yantra Ashtray, Ettore Sottsass, Italy, 1980

Founder of the Memphis design movement in the 80’s, Ettore Sottsass was renowned for his spiritual and sensorial approach to architecture and design. No exception to this was the Yantra series, which included a range of ashtrays, vases, boxes and bowls. Yantra is a Sanskrit word denoting a mystical diagram comprising nine interlocking triangles, something that inspired the Yantra series both physically and spiritually. This Yantra ashtray was designed in the 1980’s for Habitat. It comes in an incredibly rare pale blue colourway and is overall in good condition. There are a few small chips to the glaze and some marks to the base of the piece.
